What is energy medicine and why is it becoming so popular?

Energy medicine has been around for thousands of years, mostly in the

form of spiritual or shamanic healing. But pioneers such as Donna Eden,

William Collinge Ph.D. and Caroline Myss Ph.D. are showing the modern

world the "new" energy medicine of the 21st century.

Most of us have been brought up to believe that allopathic medicine, that

the kind of medicine your local doctor practices, is the only thing that can

really cure a disease. Because you're reading this, you're probably no

longer under this cultural illusion, but I just thought I'd mention it.

The subtitle of Dr. Collinge's book, Subtle Energy, is "Awakening To The

Unseen Forces In Our Lives." I think that just about sums it up. Science has

convinced that if we can't measure it, it doesn't exist. Modern energy

medicine workers, shamanic healers, medical intuitives and Reiki masters

know, without doubt, that is simply not true.

Recently, I decided to call my form of shamanic healing "energy medicine"

because the word shaman and shamanic has been so over used and at

times misrepresented. From my point of view, energy medicine begins to

bridge the gap between traditional forms of energy healing and new, more

documented, forms. The roots are the same. The role of Spirit is the same.

Once the shaman, or the medicine woman or man, learns to tap into and

read the energy world, she begins to form methods of healing and

communicating with Spirit that work for her or him. Some folks are

concerned that the new "shamans" are diluting the old traditions, when in

fact, they are merely pushing the boundaries and redefining new paths to

wholeness.

There is a powerful form of energy medicine which is especially popular

among nurses now called "Healing Touch." It requires multiple classes and

a specified number of practice cases before certification is given. Although

at some level, I realize that certification as an energy medicine practitioner

is kind of silly, I support the idea that conscientious teachers are trying to

insist on a certain minimum of training before one hangs out a shingle.

A certificate does not imply proficiency, but does indicate that the individual

has completed a basic round of classes and has shown that she

understands and feels comfortable with the form of energy medicine taught

The goal of energy medicine, as with many spirit-based traditions, is to help

the individual be a whole person, not a collection of parts. Living fully,

joyfully and healthfully, is an art and skill. It isn't just being healthy, but

living beyond your human, culturally conditioned fears, where bliss and

ecstasy reside.

Jeffre TallTrees Ph.D. has been in the forefront of holistic healing for

decades. Disillusionment with allopathic medicine after receiving her B.S. in

Nursing from UCLA put her on the path of alternative medicine. She
