The Essential Nature Of Touch

One of my favorite things in the whole world is to take a shower with
my lover. It feels delicious to let the warm water flow over both of us
as we soap each other and play slippery-slide. We laugh like little kids.
Sometimes I spontaneously break out into song. On the days that we
don't shower together, I feel a loss.
We learned early in the 20th century that babies need to be touched to
survive. Humans never lose the need to be touched but we are able to
survive as older children and adults without touch.
Notice I used the word "survive." I'm desiring to do more than survive
in my lifetime. Aren't you?
When I was in nursing school I first learned about the essential nature
of touch. I realized I had come from a family which touched very little.
I chose to change that. I trained myself to touch others. That was 35
years ago. Now I just reach out and touch.
Sociologists have studied touch across different cultures. People were
videotaped in cafes in many different countries and then the number
of times people in dyads touched one another was counted.
Guess in which country there was the least touching? If you guessed
Germany or Great Britain, you are wrong. It is the good old U.S.A. We
touch not only the least but it wasn't even close. It seems that all of
Europe touches about two to four times as much as we do.

This Has Got To Stop

As a relationship therapist, I've seen all kinds of situations, you might
say excuses for limiting intimacy. Which is partly why I wrote and
designed all the juicy practices in my ebook "Hotter Sex, Deeper Love." In fact, on page 122 we
wrote...
"The largest sex organ on the human body is the skin."
Lately I've had a run on non-demonstrative, non-verbal, non-
affectionate men. These men are not happy and their wives are livid.
We raise our boys to not talk about their feelings and we stop touching
them about 10 years of age.
This has got to stop! We are fostering generation after generation of
self-absorbed, non-communicative, and often depressed men.
These little boys (who are now grown up) did not feel loved as
children. They grew up feeling their worth was dependent on what
they did, not who they are. They don't know how to love in an adult
sense of love.
Of course, the answer is more than touching. But it begins with
touching. Touching is a fundamental means of communicating love.
We all want to touch a newborn. As this child becomes a toddler, he or
she may resist being touched for whatever reason. A parent often stops
trying. If mom or dad came from a non-touching family, that will feel
normal. It is imperative that moms and dads touch their children and
teenagers. The child grows up as does the teenager, then it will be too
late.
What mom and dad give to each other and to their children is what
they will be able (or not) to give to their loved ones. Eric Berne, the
father of Transactional Analysis, said we all need 15 hugs a day just to
stay sane. Let's stay more than sane, let's be blissful. Go out and add at
least one hug to every day of your life. Notice how you feel.

Try This At Home

Now that my primary message to couples comes from Tantra, intimacy
is a bedrock of everything we do. We always teach lovers to start with

Stand a few feet apart facing each other. Relax and breath slowly and
deeply. Slowly, ever so slowly, take tiny steps towards each other. No,
slower than that. Drag it out as long as you can.
As you get close, reach out with your heart. Open your arms with palms
up as a gesture of welcome. Feel your beloved's energy field. Let this
energy into your body and savor it.
When your bodies begin to contact, reach around each other slowly.
Don't grab. Instead, settle into each other's arms. You want to find a
comfortable place to stay still. The taller of you may need to get lower
or tilt your head.
Relax into each other everywhere you can. Bend your knees as you sink
into your beloved's body and space. Don't keep any parts of your body
stiff, tense, or apart, especially not your pelvis. Once they find a good
spot, keep your hands still. No massaging or back slapping.
Now synchronize your breathing, slow and deep in your bellies. Just
feel for a few minutes.
